112 Billion Cubic Meters of Natural Gas Found in Dailekh, Confirms Chinese Preliminary Report

A Chinese technical team has confirmed the presence of 112 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the Jaljale area of Dailekh district, based on preliminary findings shared with the Government of Nepal.

The discovery was made following a geological survey and deep drilling operation that began in Baisakh 2080 (May 2023). The exploration was conducted by China Geological Survey in collaboration with CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company, with drilling reaching depths of 4,000 meters.

According to Industry, Commerce, and Supplies Minister Damodar Bhandari, the identified gas is methane, which is considered a cleaner form of fuel. He stated that the report is based on initial findings, and a detailed report is expected by December 2025.

Local Signs and Historical Interest

Reports of naturally occurring flames in Dailekh had long drawn curiosity from locals. Scientific analysis has now linked these phenomena to flammable gas seeping from underground sources.

Use and Future Plan

Officials say methane can be used for cooking gas, electricity generation, and industrial purposes, including fertilizer production. If the detailed study confirms commercial viability, the government has planned to begin a 75-day trial production phase with an estimated investment of Rs. 65 billion.

The government had shown increased interest in petroleum exploration following the 2015 blockade, leading to renewed efforts in resource identification across various regions of Nepal. This exploration in Dailekh is part of that broader effort.

Further drilling in three additional locations within Dailekh is also being considered to assess the full scale of the resource.
